Description
Appearance
Height: About 6 to 7 feet tall
Build: Massive and broad-shouldered, weighing an estimated 350–400 pounds
Coloration: Covered head to toe in long, shaggy gray hair — hence the name “Grey Ghost”
Eyes: Often described as large and luminous, said to glow faintly in the dark or reflect light eerily
Face: Some say it had a more human-like face than a gorilla’s, though partially obscured by matted hair
Movement: Walked upright like a man, but with a heavy, loping gait; its steps were slow yet powerful
👣 The 1955 Encounter
Witness: Joseph Whaley, a local forestry worker.
Setting: Late summer, humid afternoon; Whaley was cutting brush near the creek when he heard splashing.
What happened: He went to investigate, saw the creature about 30 feet away, and fled. When he returned with others later, they found large, human-like footprints in the mud but no further sign of the creature.
Behavior
Habitat: The marshy, wooded areas surrounding Kinchafoonee Creek, which winds through southwest Georgia near Terrell County. Sound: Witnesses claimed it emitted a deep, guttural growl or moaning sound before appearing. Temperament: It reportedly stared silently at the witness before retreating back into the swamp — not overtly aggressive, but intimidating. Disappearance: It supposedly “vanished” into the fog — hence the “ghost” in its name.
