Description
While based on real person (Mercy Lena Brown, died 1892), folklore surrounding her alleged vampirism persists in Rhode Island. During tuberculosis epidemic, desperate townsfolk exhumed her body, found it 'undead', and burned her heart to stop 'vampirism'. Reports of her spirit in Chestnut Hill Cemetery continue. This case influenced Bram Stoker and vampire literature.
