The Haunted History of the St. Simons Lighthouse

Perched on the quiet shoreline of St. Simons Island, Georgia, the St. Simons Lighthouse looks like something from a postcard—white tower, blue sky, calm seas. But behind its postcard beauty lies a chilling story that has haunted the island for more than a century.

A Beacon Through the Ages

The original lighthouse was built in 1810 to guide ships safely through the shifting sands and treacherous currents off the Georgia coast. During the Civil War, Confederate troops destroyed it to prevent Union forces from using it as a navigational aid.

The current lighthouse, rising 104 feet and with 129 winding iron steps, was completed in 1872. It still stands proudly today, both a working aid to navigation and a historic museum.

Murder in the Light Keeper’s Quarters

In 1880, tragedy struck within the keeper’s residence. The head keeper, Frederick Osborne, and his assistant, John Stevens (or Stephens), got into a heated argument—accounts differ on what sparked it, though some say it involved insults about their wives.

The fight escalated, and Stevens shot Osborne dead inside the lighthouse. He claimed self-defense and was later acquitted.

But according to legend, Osborne’s spirit never truly left his post.

The Keeper Who Never Clocked Out

Soon after Osborne’s death, lighthouse workers and visitors began reporting strange activity inside the tower:

  1. Footsteps echoing up the spiral staircase when no one was there.
  2. The faint smell of tobacco smoke, said to be from Osborne’s beloved pipe.
  3. Mechanical malfunctions that mysteriously fixed themselves after someone called out to the late keeper for help.

One famous story claims that in 1908, a keeper’s wife, frustrated by a broken mechanism, called out to Osborne’s spirit for assistance. Moments later, the machinery began working again—on its own.

Modern Encounters

Today, visitors who climb the 129 steps often describe feeling watched, hearing faint footsteps behind them, or smelling tobacco smoke in the empty stairwell.

Ghost tours on St. Simons Island frequently include the lighthouse, and paranormal enthusiasts visit hoping for a glimpse—or a sound—of the devoted keeper who may still be tending his light.

Even skeptics admit: the building’s age, isolation, and echoing acoustics make it the perfect setting for a haunting.

History, Legend, or Both?

Whether you believe in ghosts or not, the story of the St. Simons Lighthouse is more than a spooky tale—it’s a reflection of the island’s maritime past and the people who risked (and sometimes lost) their lives keeping the coastal waters safe.

Next time you visit, pause on the spiral stairs. If you catch a whiff of pipe smoke or hear slow, steady footsteps above you, remember Keeper Osborne—faithful to his duty, even in death.
